Thomas Guest
2019 Charity Bowl Recipient
Thomas Guest grew in Madison, MS, and is the son of Scott and Marti Guest. Growing up, Thomas was known for his positive attitude and charm. Thomas attended Germantown High School in Madison, where he was active on the lacrosse team. Thomas was active in the youth group at Madison Heights Presbyterian Church, and spent summers working at Camp Hopewell outside of Oxford, Mississippi. Thomas graduated from GHS in May of 2017 and began pursuing a degree in biosciences at Mississippi State University during the fall of 2017. During his first semester at Mississippi State, Thomas pledged and became an active member of the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity at Mississippi State University.
While hunting on November 29 with friends near Macon, Mississippi, Thomas was in an ATV accident. Thomas and a friend were riding on a four-wheeler when one of the tires had a blow out, throwing both of them from the ATV. While Thomas’ friend suffered only a wrist injury, Thomas suffered multiple broken bones, a damaged spleen, a concussion, and a severed spinal cord. As a result of the spinal cord injury, Thomas was left paralyzed from the chest down.
Following the accident, Thomas was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jackson, MS. While at Baptist, Thomas underwent multiple surgeries and spent substantial time in intensive care. Following two weeks at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Thomas was transferred to the Shepard Center in Atlanta to begin rehabilitation. Thomas remained at the Shepard Center for six months, finally returning home to Madison in May of 2018. Upon arriving home, Thomas immediately knew his first goal was to return to Mississippi State as a student.
Despite the challenges presented by his injury, Thomas has shown courage and positivity that inspires everyone around him. Thomas returned to Mississippi State in the fall of 2018 to continue pursuing a degree in biosciences. Thomas remains an active member of Sigma Chi, and currently lives on campus in the Sigma Chi house with the help of an assisted living professional. Thomas’ long-term goals include finishing his degree, finding a job, raising a family, and walking again. Sigma Nu is proud to support Thomas and his family as they continue to face the challenges of living with a spinal cord injury.
